Other Backward Class (OBC) is a collective term used by the Government of India to classify castes which are educationally or socially disadvantaged. It is one of several official classifications of the population of India, along with Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (SCs and STs)
The term OBC stands for ' Other Backward Classes '
These classes do not fall under the categories of SCs and STs. OBCs are group of peoples who are educationally and socially disadvantaged. This groups suffer from lack of adequate oppurtunity for development, health, housing and education.
Government are trying to uplift them by:-
i.) The government has declared the social practise of untouchability as a criminal offence.
ii.) Government said that no citizens of India will be prevented from using various ublic facilities such as shops, hotels, wells and etc. on the grounds of his/her caste identity.
iii.) Under the policy of affirmative action, reservations for the SCs, STs and OBCs have been created in government-aided institutions and various jobs at central, state and local levels.
iv.) To protect the interests of marginalised groups, the National Commission of SCs and STs have been contituted.
