Dr.
Potu Narasimha Rao, a
famous scholar and an eminent cytologist belonged to a poor family in Muppala
village of Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh. He completed his graduation in
Agriculture and did his MS at IARI, New Delhi. In USA he did his research work
on the cytogenetics of tobacco plant. During his research, a cell line called
HELA, isolated from a human tumour was established in 1952. He worked on this
cell line and received his PhD in 1963. He shifted his attention then from
plant cytogenetic to the field of cancer cells in culture medium. He conducted
research in cell kinematics and studied the “triggering factor” of cell
division.
