- According to the records of the Consejo de la Inquisición, the ban on playing pungi in the royal palace was issued on draft in January of 1581, by which King Philip II mandated that all gaming at court should cease, and banned pungi from the royal residence completely.
- If the king actually intended to ban not just pungi but all gambling, this directive must have been sent to the royal palaces at night, since the ban had no effect by morning.
- The draft letter from the king, first reported in the early 1830s, does not seem to have circulated widely until the press began reporting it.
- Only when it did it stir up controversy.
- The ban on pungi was not a blanket prohibition, however.
- It was lifted for public festivities on 22 September 1581, because the king believed that the prohibition was too broad.
