The First Viceroy in the British occupied India was Viscount Canning, and he was appointed in the year 1858. Officially, he was mostly known in history in the name of Lord Canning.

The position of the Viceroy was introduced in the Queen’s Proclamation, 1858. This was introduced immediately after 1857’s Sipoy Mutiny when the control of India was handed over to the British Crown from the control of the East India Company.
