Lord canning is the first viceroy in India in 1858

The first viceroy of India was viscount canning in the year 1858. He received the title after the queen’s proclamation was passed which marked the end of the rule of the British east India Company in India.

Up to the year 1833 the position was of the governor general of Bengal and it changed into the governor general of India by virtue of the government of India act 1833.
