Lord Canning became the first viceroy of India in the year 1858.

He served as the Governor General of India from the year 1856 to 1862. During his tenure, the Government of India Act 1858 was passed which created the office of Viceroy to be held by the same person who becomes the Governor General of India.

and because at the time when the Act was passed Lord Canning was the governor general of India he also served as the first viceroy of India.

Lord Canning was also successful in suppressing the mutiny of 1857 and 1858 by passing the Indian councils act, 1861. He also removed the doctrine of lapse which was passed by Lord Dalhousie.

During his tenure the code of criminal procedure was enacted and Indian high courts were also established.
