Sati is derived from the name of the goddess Sati, who immolated herself because of not being able to bear her father Daksha's humiliation towards her husband Shiva
The Bengal Sati Regulation which banned the Sati practice in India was passed on December 4, 1829 by the then Governor-General Lord William Bentinck. The regulation described the practice of Sati as revolting to the feelings of human nature.
Later after the revolt of 1857 the crown decided to withdraw from religious matters of India.
It has beein criticised by Islamic rulers of Mughal periods. Many Hindu scholars have argued against Sati whose names we all know by heart- Raja Ram Mohan Roy. Intial attempts also includes Humayun, the first to try a royal agreement against the practice. Akbar was next to issue official prohibition of Sati. He also issued orders that no woman could commit Sati without a specific permission from his chief police officers
Even The Portuguese banned the practice in Goa by 1515.
Unfortunately India has registered cases of sati in 21st century as well. A few unfortunate villages of India still face this problem.
