This term was coined by the famous English physician, Edward Jenner, who invented the first vaccine and the method of vaccination. The first vaccine was made against the most prevailing disease of his time, smallpox.

It has been derived from two root words, vacca ( cow in Latin ) and vaccinia ( the Latin name for cowpox ). Thus the words 'vaccine' and 'vaccination' have come into usage.
