The Clergy (Church Members) collected the taxes called tithes from the French peasants.

What was Tithes??

=> It was a tax levied by the Clergy(1st estate) on the people of 3rd estate.

=> It consists of 1/10 part of the total production in agriculture.

=> It was directly paid to the church community members.

★ In the 18 th century the French society was divided into three estates.

★Only the members of 3 rd estate had to pay taxes .

Thanks !!
