He(Valmiki) was a robber in his early life. He came across a saint who asked him why he was doing all that bad things and his answer was for his family. The saint asked him to check with family if they will share the results of his bad karma. Family members declined. This made him to” wake up” and changed his life. He did TAP(austerity) and achieved enlightenment and became a renowned saint.

Sage Valmiki composed Ramayana when Rama's wife Sita was exiled in his hermitage. He also taught Ramayana to Luv and Kush
