The middle class, which consisted of the peasants , workers and bourgeoisie(merchants, traders, doctors , teachers, lawyers and so on) , constituted about 95% of the total population . The third estate despite paying taxes had no social standing.
On 17 June 1789, the Third estate(middle class) formed the National Assembly.
On 20 June 1789, members of the National Assembly met in a Tennis Court and vowed to stay united in their struggle to frame a constitution for the nation . This event is callad the Tennis Court Oath. This made Louis XVI apprehensive and he resorted to terror tactics to suppress the National Assembly. This resulted in fighting , which broke out in Paris and other parts of France.Peasants also revolted against their landlords which was one of the cause of the French revolution.
