Explanation:
It is a hot afternoon in the countryside. A group of some 40 soldiers moving with their regiment. They were the rear guard of the regiment. As they approached a junction they heard some strange noise. Within a fraction of a second, a group of 100 people barged towards them. The rebels attacked them mercilessly and disappeared into thin air. This was the start of Guerrilla warfare which stared in the 18th century and is very much shaping our world now.
The name Guerrilla warfare rings in our mind a covert operation. Happening in remote parts of jungles in South America, Africa or an Asian country. Contrary to all the beliefs the origin of Guerrilla war was rather western. It all started in SPAIN
With the rise of Napoleon to power in France. Europe submerged into a war that will cost the loss of millions of lives. Napoleon waged war against the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Prussia, and Russia. Napoleon conquered most of those countries.
Napoleon eyes now fell on the tiny island up the coast of France, “Great Britain”. Napoleon declared a naval blockade by forcing his alliance partners to stop trading with Britain. He also ordered his partners not to allow British ships to sail in their waters.
Britain, used its skillful navy to bypass the blockade. Britain smuggled goods in and out of Europe via weak points in Europe’s coastline. Spain was always a swaying partner. Napoleon decided to conquer Spain, which he did and installed his brother Joseph as King of Spain.
Many historians call Napoleon’s invasion of Spain as the Vietnam of Napoleon. The cost of maintaining Spain with an army was a huge loss to France. The defeated Spanish army regrouped under one banner and started waging war against the occupying French forces. To make it worse a British army under Duke of Wellington landed in Spain to support the Spanish army.
Most of the battle in Spain ended in a stalemate with British, Spanish forces taking a defensive position which the French forces cant take back.
Resistance groups started to take shape in Spain against the invading French army. These resistance groups organized themselves and were waging a hit and run tactic. Britain from its side supplied the resistance group with finance and arms support. The resistance group grew in size and their attack tactics caused panic among the French forces
The resistance groups showed no mercy to captured French forces they torture them and subject to brutality. The French forces were more afraid of being captured by a resistance group than facing a battle. The British liked this strategy of waging mini wars and coined the term “Guerrilla” which means mini-wars. So much was their atrocities that a french courier carrying a message would need 200 cavalry men for protection during the journey.
The French forces were caught between managing resistance and British Spanish forces. If the French concentrate on eradicating the British Spanish army, then they lose the countryside to the resistance group which will sabotage their logistics. If the french concentrate on quelling the resistance then they will lose Spain territorial land to British Spanish forces
Caught between the dilemma the French forces faced defeat and returned home. The Spanish defeat started Napoleon’s downfall. The irony is during the Waterloo battle which ended Napoleon reign as a monarch the British troops were commanded by Duke of Wellington.
Now Guerrilla warfare is a common term used across the globe by a resistance group. It all started with the British helping Spain to defeat the occupying French army
