Previously a tricolour flag with 8 lotuses representing British provinces and a crescent moon representing Hindus and Muslims was designed later Gandhi Jitendra changed the colour scheme, red,green and yellow to saffron white and green with a spinning wheel in the centre.

It was seen as a symbol of self help, unity and created a nationalist spirit amongst all. So, seen as a symbol of defiance against British rule
