Sanghamitta was sent to Sri Lanka for the spread of Buddhism by Ashoka. After Kalinga war, Ashoka becomes a Buddhist monk and want to spread the Buddhism in other parts of India as well.

While Sanghamitta was sent with other nuns to spreads Buddhism in Sri Lanka.

After Sanghamita’s contribution in spreading of Buddhism in Sri Lanka and after establishing Bikhhunī Sangh, she was considered as lady Buddhism and become popular with this name.
