Shivaji Maharaj basically fought against his own people who were representing Adilshahi or Mughal Sultanate. The reason for saying this is many Hindus represented Adilshahi & Mughals, either directly like Mirza Raje Jaysing OR those working under AfzalKhan or Shaistekhan.

Answer:

The great Maratha ruler Shri Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was mainly fighting Aurangzeb and the Mughal Empire.

Explanation:

  • Born on February 19, 1630 at  Shahaji Raje and Jijabay at the Shivaji Fortress, Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was the most courageous warrior and king of the Maratha tribe to confront the rule of the Mughal Empire.
  • His original name was Shivaji Bhosle, but due to his management and leadership he was given the title of "Chhatrapati" or "Chief of Kshatriyas". Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj founded the Maratha Empire and fought several battles during his reign. In 1674 he founded an independent Maratha Empire with the capital of Rigad.
  • At the beginning of the 17th century, a new warrior class, the Maratha Kingdom, emerged as the Bonsul family in the Pune district gained a military and political advantage  of being local from the Ahmadnagar Kingdom. Therefore, they took privilege and hired a large number of Maratha sardars and soldiers into their army. Shivaji was an experienced soldier and a capable manager.
