Discovery of antibiotics:

In the 1920's , British scientist Alexander Fleming was working in his laboratory at St. Mary's hospital in London when almost  by accident, he discovered a naturally growing substance that could attack certain bacteria.

The term antibiotics literally means "against life": in the case aganist microbes. There are many types of antibiotics-antibacterials, antivirals, antifungals, and antiparasitics.

Alexander Fleming was, it seems , a bit disorderly in his work and accidently discovered penicillin. Upon returning from the holiday in Suffolk in1928, he noticed that a fungus, Penicillium notatum had contaminated a culture plate of Staphylococcus bacteria.

     P. notatum proved extermely effective even at very low concentration, preventing Staphylococcus growth even when diluted 800 times, was less toxic than the disinfectants used at the time.

Treatment with penicillin was hugely successful, and the US government began supporting the mass production of the drugs.

By D-Day in 1944 penicillin was being widely used to treat troops for infection both in the field and in hospitals throughout Europe.
