Robert Hooke, a German botanist in 1665 while living with Anthony Van Leeuwenhok. He was observing thin slices of cork under a microscope and observed it was made of tiny partitions which he called cells, he was actually observing dead plant cells. The cell theory was developed for the first time in 1839 by Mathias Schleiden and Theodore Schwann which states that, states that all organisms are composed of one or more cells, that cells are the fundamental unit of structure and function in all living organisms, that they all come from pre existing cells, and that all cells contain the hereditary information necessary for regulating cell functions and for transmitting information to the next generation of cells.
