Cell was discovered by Robert Hooke in 1665. He used a rudimentary compound microscope to study thin slices of cork. He observed that the cork slice was made of millions of little compartments shaped like honeycombs . He coined the term cell to describe this compartments. However, he did not understand their real structure or function.
