Robert Hooke discovered cells with the help of his self-designed microscope. In 1665, Robert Hooke was examining a thin slice of cork and he saw that the cork resembled the structure of a honeycomb consisting of many compartments.

While observing a thin slice of cork under microscope he saw several pores that were separated by walls surrounding each of them. Hooke named them ‘cell’. As cork bears dead cells he could not give any description of nucleus or cytoplasm.
