Answer:

Robert Hooke was the first to discover cells.

Robert Hooke ( 1635 - 1703 ), an English scientist, used two lenses to devise a compound microscope. He studied a thin a slice of cork under his microscope and observed small-box like structures un it. He called them 'Cells'. The word 'cell' is derived from the Latin word 'Cellula', meaning 'small compartment'. Thus, cell was discovered and named for the first time by Robert Hooke in 1665. Cork is obtained from the bark of a tree. It is made up of cells which were once living. So, Robert Hookr had actually observed dead cells.
