Robert Hooke discovered cells in 1665:
- Robert Hooke was an Englishman, who was the first person to discover cells in the year 1665.
- He observed a thin slice of cork( obtained from tree bark) using a relatively crude microscope with very low resolution and observed a honeycomb-like structure with many little compartments that he later termed as "cells".
- Using his improved version of a microscope he was able to observe the individual cells in the cork slice. He then reported to the world that life's smallest structural units were cells.
- The word "cell" in Latin means "little room".
