This origin of chloroplasts was first suggested by the Russian biologist Konstantin Mereschkowskiin 1905 after Andreas Schimper observed in 1883 that chloroplasts closely resemble cyanobacteria. Chloroplasts are only found in plants, algae, and the amoeboid Paulinella chromatophora.
