After the discovery of protons and electrons,it was noticed that all the mass of any atom cannot for on the basis of protons and electrons present in it.As you can take example of carbon atom which contains 6 protons and 6 electrons.So,as we know the mass of electrons is so small it can be ignored.So,the atomic mass of carbon only in 6u,which is the mass of 6 protons.This is wrong because the actual atomic mass of carbon is 12u,So how we can explain this extra mass of 6 units?So this problem was solved by a genius whose name is James Chadwick in 1932.
