Oxygen was discovered by Priestely in 1774. He was an french scientist and first time successfully produced oxygen from mercuric oxide. When mercuric oxide is heated at high temperature in furnace it lead to discovery of colourless and odourless gas known as oxygen.

He called this gas produced as 'dephlogisticated gas' and the name was given by Antoine Lavoisier.Oxygen is third most abundant gas and makes 21% of earth atmosphere, the gas is the supporter of combustion and is required by every living being.

In modern days oxygen is produced from electrolysis of water or by heating potassium chlorate (KClO3). Large amounts can be extracted from liquefied air through fractional distillation.
