The British scientist named Joseph pristly discovered the gas in 1774. Soon after his findings he visited French scientist Antonie Lavoisier, whom he discussed with the properties of the gas and naming was given by Lavoisier as ‘Oxygen’. Pristly published the report on his findings in the same year. Since Pristly officially published his findings to the outer world for the first time, the world world officially considered or recognised him as the discoverer of oxygen gas . The same gas was discovered again by Antonie Lavoisier independently in 1775, besides the naming of the gas, he believed that oxygen is present in almost all acids.

kp200331: Oxygen was "discovered" by a number of scientists over a fairly brief time period. First discovery is normally credited to the Swedish scientist Carl Wilhelm Scheele in 1772. He called his discovery "fire-air" because it supported combustion.

Unfortunately (for him), Scheele's findings weren't published until 1777.
