Ilya Ilyich Mechnikov was a Russian Imperial zoologist of Moldavian and Ukrainian Jewish origin best known for his pioneering research in immunology. In particular, he is credited with the discovery of phagocytes in 1882. This discovery turned out to be the major defence mechanism in innate immunity.

The presence of foreign particles within cells was first described in the 1860s by pathologist Kranid Slavjansky. In the 1880s Russian-born zoologist and microbiologist Élie Metchnikoff introduced the term phagocyte in reference to immune cells that engulf and destroy foreign bodies such as bacteria.
