Joseph Priestley

He discovered the phenomenon that we breathe oxygen & release carbon dioxide by an experiment which he carried out in 1774, in which a rat kept in a airtight enclosure died due to suffocation exhausting all the oxygen of the enclosure(leaving only carbon dioxide & nitrogen). If the enclosure was also contaning photosynthesizing plant then the rat survived.the Gases in enclosure were oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitrogen(as we all know that plant release oxygen & take carbon dioxide so both got survived Rat due oxygen from plant & Plant due to Carbon dioxide from rat as carbon dioxide is necessary for photosynthesis.)

hope the answer will help you
