Crude oil was discovered here in late 19th century. Digboi is known as the Oil City of Assam where the first oil well in Asia was drilled. The first refinery was started here as early as 1901. Digboi has the oldest oil well in operation.

According to the legends, the oil town of India, Digboi was discovered by an English engineer.
Back in 1867, a team of Italian engineers have been appointed by the Assam Railways and Trading Company to lay a railway line between Dibrugarh and Margherita. During the mission of laying railway line the accidentally discovered oil at a distance of ten mile from Margherita when they found elephants emerging out from the deep dark jungle with oil stains on their legs.
