The correct answer should be - Ptolemy.

The Niger River is the chief and 3rd longest river in the western part of Africa.

The name 'Niger' probably came during the European exploration from the Mediterranean world during the Classical era. According to the old writings, Ptolemy had named the 2 rivers in the interior of the Sahara desert as - "Gir" and "Ni-Gir". The "Ni-Gir" was on the farther south side of the Sahara desert.

The answer of your question is “Ptolemy”

Nigar is actually the river of western Africa and considered third longest river of Africa with extension of about 4180 km.

Although the original origin of this name is still unknown but in the classical era European exploration result in the name of “Niger” This was because they got the better knowledge of the area. Studying the old writing  in the interior Sahara result in the information that “Ptolemy” named two rivers in this desert . This may be the first discovery of the river.
