1) In 1956, an Act was passed to recognise Sinhala as the official language, thus disregarding Tamil.

2) Later, the new constitution stipulated that the country should foster and protect Buddhism. The Tamils were Hindus or Muslims. There was 7% christians who were both tamils and srilankans.

All these govt. policies coming one after the other increased the feeling of alienation among the Tamils.

The distrust between the two communities led to civil war, which had a terrible setback on the economic, social and cultural  background of the country.

The measures of the Act 1956 introduced by Sinhalese Government made the Sri Lankan Tamils feel alienated. (i) They felt that none of the major political parties led by the Buddhist Sinhalese were sensitive to their language and culture.
