The Listeners by Walter John de la Mare: Walter de la Mare’s  has the theme of the supernatural and mystery. The traveler does not accept spirits in the house completely. It shows that the modern rationality is futiel and narrow in mind. By means of the poem the poet is attempting to convey that the world of spirits, which we must be ready to accept and  is invisible to human eyes.

Explanation:

  • A traveler arrives with his horse during a moonlit night and knocks at the door. He requires the opening of the door, but he receives no answer to his request. In the house there is a deadly silence, and a bird flies over its head from the window. The traveller knocks again at the door but is again silent.
  • A party of Spirits living in the house are listening to his appeals. However, they remain silent and immobile. The traveler gradually senses the uncomfortable atmosphere and appears to realize that nobody opens the door for him. He had perhaps come there to fulfill a promise which he should have made to an inmate of the house in the past.
  • So he announced at the top of his voice,' Tell them I've come, and not one responded,' I've kept up promise.' The man ends up leaving and puts on his horse. The vibrations of his hooves on the stone was heard by the household inmate  as his horse gallops into the night.
  • The poem implies that the house's inmate  are dead and the house is now occupied by their spirits. The dead live comfortably without contact with life, and they decide to stay this way. Therefore they remained calm until the traveler left when the traveler came to their door.
