To my mind the greatest mercy to Shylock was shown by the Duke as Portia only pronounced his guilt and possible punishment and Antonio excuses what he might get on execution of the Shylock's punishment. Duke grants Shylock his life but orders punishment only. To a mercenary like Shylock, this is more than death itself to go without his money and faith in Sematism.
