Who does Lencho have complete faith in? Which sentences in the story tell
wod
you this?
Why does the postmaster send money to Lencho? Why does he sign the
letter 'God'?
Did Lencho try to find out who had sent the money to him? Why/Why not?
Who does Lencho think has taken the rest of the money? What is the irony
in the situation? (Remember that the irony of a situation is an unexpected
aspect of it. An ironic situation is strange or amusing because it is the
opposite of what is expected.)

1. Lencho has complete faith in God. The following extracts prove this right:

  • “God,” he wrote, “if you don’t help me, my family and I will go hungry this year.”
  • He wrote ‘To God’ on the envelope, put the letter inside and, still troubled, went to town.
  • God could not have made a mistake, nor could he have denied Lencho what he had requested.

2. The postmaster was moved by the fact that Lencho, having so much faith in God, wrote a letter to him. As he was moved by this, he decided to help the man out. He called to his other employees and asked them to gather as much as they could. By the end, they were able to gather seventy pesos. He signed the letter 'God', because he wanted Lencho to know that it had come from God alone.

3. No, Lencho did not try finding out who had sent the money to him, as he had immense faith in God and believed that he was able to help him.

4. Lencho thinks that the post office employees had taken the rest of the money. The irony was that it was the post office employees themselves who decided to help Lencho. They were able to gather as much as they could and thought that would make him happy in the least. Yet, Lencho had gotten angry and blamed it on the post office employees.
