The doctrine of lapse was an annexation policy applied by the British East India Company in India until 1858. Many Indian states were annexed by Lord Dalhousie, the Governor General of India to the English East India Company.
It was introduced by Lord Dalhousie, the governor-general of India (1848–56), in order to deal with questions of succession to Hindu Indian states.
