VishnuShastri Pandit, a great social reformer of Maharashtra encouraged the widow remarriage in Maharashtra in 1866.
VishnuShastri Pandit was inspired by Phule and thus founded an institution named Punar Vivahtojak Mandal(remarriage associatio) for the remarriage of widows in 1966 in Maharashtra. He was among the first reformers to raise widow remarriage in Pune, Maharashtra.
