Answer:

In a bid to increase green cover, a group of youth has decided to encourage people in Udupi city and district to plant saplings in their houses and surroundings, and grow more trees.

Addressing presspersons here on Tuesday, Avinash Kamath, head of the team, said that destruction of trees was rampant due to rapid urbanisation and widening of roads in the city and the district. Hence, they had decided to launch Namma mane, namma mara and Namma shale, namma mara schemes to increase green cover.

If any person had space around his/her house or in their compound, and wished to plant a sapling, they could give a call to 9986220255. A member of their team would visit the house and plant a sapling for free. A photograph of the sapling would be taken. A copy of the photograph would be with the team and another with the house owner. The team would also take down the address and contact number of the house owner and keep in touch with him/her. “Our only request to the members of the house is to water the sapling for two years during summer. We will not charge them anything,” he said.

The team would post a sticker at the house encouraging others to plant saplings. The team will plant only one or two saplings at a house in the city because it might be difficult to take care of more saplings. But more than two saplings could be planted in rural areas.

The team had already spoken to Udupi Range Forest Officer Ramesh and he had agreed to provide 1,000 saplings for the purpose. If necessary, the team would also purchase saplings and plant them, if there was demand. Under the ‘Namma shale, namma mara’ scheme, the same project would be implemented in interested schools, Mr. Kamath said.

Gururaj Sanil, member of the team, said that the team would plant fruit-giving saplings. Fruit-giving trees attracted birds and hence would beneficial to the latter as well, he said.

Manjunath Borgalgudde, team member, said that many people lauded the environmentalist Saalurmarada Thimmakka for planting trees. “Instead of just talking about her, we should take inspiration and plant trees in our houses,” he said.

The scheme would be launched at the house of Chandramohan at Chitpady here on December 3, he said.
