Sir Syed Ahmad Khan established Mohammedan Anglo-Oriental College in 1875, which later became Aligarh Muslim University in 1920. He was of the view that knowledge of English and western sciences was necessary to maintain political influence of muslims in India. It is now a reputed university of the country and funded by the central government.
