The Constitution of India was framed by Constituent Assembly which was established in 1946.

The first session of the Constituent Assembly started on 9th December, 1946. Dr. Sachidanand Sinha, the oldest member of the Constituent Assembly, was chosen as the temporary president of the Assembly. On 11th December, 1946, Dr. Rajendra Prashad was unanimously elected its permanent president.

After Independence, the top leaders of our country felt the need for a constitution which was essential to run our country democratically, thus, to draft a constitution, a Constituent Assembly was formed with Dr. Rajendra Prasad as its president and it started working on December 9, 1946. Dr. B R Ambedkar was appointment as the chairman of the drafting committee. The Constituent Assembly met for 165 days, spread over a period of 2 years 11 months and 17 days and the Constitution was passed by the Assembly on November 26, 1949 and came into effect on January 26, 1950.
