The word protoplasm was coined by Sir J. E. Purkinje in 1839. He gave this name for the material of the animal embryo. However, in 1846, Sir Hugo Von Mohl redefined this term and referred to it as slimy, granular and semi-fluid substance present in the vacuole, separating them with cell wall and cell sap.
