New Zealand physicist and chemist Ernest Rutherford succeeded in penetrating the nucleus on this day in 1919. Upon bombarding nitrogen atoms with alpha particles, he observed the release of a proton. Patrick Blackett later confirmed that this was a transmutation of nitrogen to oxygen.
