Raja Ram Mohan Roy founded Brahmo Samaj in 1828 at Calcutta. It was first named Brahmo Sabha but later renamed Brahmo Samaj. It believed in Monotheism or worship of one God. It condemned idol worship and laid emphasis on prayer, meditation, charity, morality and strengthening the bonds of unity between men of all religions and creeds.

Arya samaj was founded by Swami Dayanand Saraswati. Arya Samaj, condemned practices of several different religions and communities, including such practices as idol worship, animal sacrifice, pilgrimages, priest craft, offerings made in temples, the castes, child marriages, meat eating and discrimination against women. He argued that all of these practices ran contrary to good sense and the wisdom of the Vedas.
