▪The outbreak of the Revolution
In France, the monarch did not have the right to impose new taxes according to his will alone. Rather, he had to call a meeting of the Estates General, which were representatives of each estate and each had the power of one vote respectively. But the third estate demanded that voting must be conducted by the assembly as a whole, where each member would have one vote. Initially, this request was denied, but after several protests and agitations (especially the one that stormed the fortress prison, the Bastille) on 4 August 1789, the Assembly abolished the system of taxes and privileges. In 1791, the power in the hands of the monarch were distributed among the executive, legislature and judiciary and thus France became a constitutional monarchy.
▪From a Monarchy to a Republic

>> elections were held and all men above the age of 21 were entitled to vote. The newly elected assembly was called the Convention. On 21 September 1792, it abolished the monarchy and declared France a republic. Later Robespierre pursued his policies so relentlessly that his own people demanded moderation. He executed all those who were enemies of the republic and also imposed restrictions on the peasants. After the next round of elections, a two-way governing system emerged consisting of a Directory and Legislative council. the political instability gave rise to a military dictator, Napolean Bonaparte.
>The revolution also consisted of women revolutionaries prominently, Olympe de Gouges. They strived for girl education, legalisation of a divorce, and most importantly right to vote.
So, the French Revolution can be summed up as a series of events which resulted in abolition of slavery, abolition of censorship, abolition of monarchy and equal political and fundamental rights for all.
