In 1890, Helen came to know about a deaf and blind girl in Norway who had learnt to speak. This filled Helen with a desire to speak. She was taken to Miss Sarah Fuller who was the principal of the Horace Mann School. A sweet natured lady, she started to teach Helen how to speak. She passed her hand lightly over Helen’s face and made her feel the position of her tongue and lips. Helen imitated her motion and was able to learn six elements of speech in an hour’s time. The first sentence that she spoke was - It is warm.
At this point, though Miss Fuller and Miss Sullivan could understand Helen, most people could not. Finally, with lot of hard work and Miss Sullivan's genius, Helen progressed and learnt to speak.

Helen was very happy after she learnt to speak. She went back to her family. Her mother pressed her close to her. She was speechless and trembled with delight. Little Mildred seized her free hand and kissed it and danced while her father expressed his pride and affection in a big silence.
