The poem talks about "machine" or "engine". As We all know that engine is inside a machine simply and it is the driving force of a machine means that every thing depends on engine if engine is well then it will work properly so in other way it is directly proportional to working of machine. The engine also needs fuel to work. When the poet looks at the tree in the beginning , it is silent and still. When the goldfinch enters its thickness, a machine starts up.
In the poem The tree is compared to a machine which starts working when the engine is filled with fuel. The following lines makes this clear. "It is the engine of her family. She stokes it full". Engine refers to the chicks into the nest. When goldfinch feedsthem, then the engine starts working and naturally the machine also. So in the poem tree is considered as the machine. Inside it the baby chicks in the nest, the engine and the food for them is the fuel.

Hello,
Here is your answer ➡️
In the chapter Laburnum Top ,the nestlings (baby bird) referred as the machine because when mother bird used to come on tree all her young ones start chirruping and make noise like machine.
Machine also makes lots of noise , that's why the poet create the image of machine in the poem.
Hope it helps you...
