All living things are basically made up of protiens (all cells are made up of protiens). Now, in non-living things, there might be things like wood, which is actually just dead cells. But if you talk about something like a metal, it's non-living in the real sense, it never had life.

Thus, you can say that the difference actually exists due to the organisation of atoms and molecules into cells in living things. Or, in other words, those things which have organic compounds present in them ( Protiens, carbohydrates and fats) , forming cell level organisation are living.
