In English, we have six different verb tenses to refer to events past (past simple & continuous, present perfect simple & continuous and past perfect simple and continuous). They indicate a relationship (or lack thereof) with another event, past or present.

"I saw this movie" (past simple) indicates an action (the watching of the movie) rooted in a specific moment with no relation to other events.

I ate lunch (at noon).

She went to Paris (last week).

We went for a walk (on Saturday).

"I have seen this movie" (present perfect simple) indicates an action (the watching of the movie) one or more times in the past (i.e. no specific moment) up until now and/or relates to the present.

I have eaten lunch (and am no longer hungry).

She has gone to Paris (so you won't find her here).

We have gone for a walk (and are still out).

Hope that helps!
