Thomas Babington Macaulay was the one who started English education in India. English education Act was passed in 1835.
Background:- The British had to learn various languages earlier, like Hindi, Urdu, Persian, Sanskrit, Marathi, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam and so on. It was hard for them to learn all the languages and hence they decided to introduce English as a medium of education in all provinces of British India.
Hindu Gurukulas, Pathashalas, Vidhyapeethas were places where Pundits, Shashtris, Acharyas taught. Mostly Brahmins, they taught Sanskrit, Local Languages, Literature, Maths, Vedas, Upanishads, Ayurveda and so on. Muslim Madarasas were places where Maulvis taught. However, both Hindu and Muslim women weren't educated and Dalits were denied education.
