Answer:
Mughal Emperor Akbar introduced Ilahi-i-Gaz.
Explanation:
- Akbar's regime saw many territorial divisions and plots for the first time in medieval history. For political and financial reasons, Akbar's kingdom was 15 subahs (originally 12 subahs, but 15 after Akbar's death), 187 sarkars and 3367 mahals. He ordered the standardization of units of measurement, and the so-called Ilahi-i-Gaz became his own land measure. This Ilahi-i-Gaz was about 41 fingers (29 to 32 inches) long, shorter than the Sikandar Gazi (about 39 inches) used by Shershah.
- Gaz as a measure of land has its origins in the time of Sikandar Lodi.
- Unification of land surveying was introduced to eliminate all kinds of ambiguity when determining the land range and reduce extortion/corruption by officials.
- Later, a rope called tenab was used for surveying (paimaish). Akbar also reformed Tenab, as this rope was affected to varying lengths by seasonal drought and humidity. Instead of regular ropes, Akbar ordered Tenab to be assembled from bamboo splinters along with iron rings. This ensured that tenab's length varied little with season. Another change made by the Akbar was to fix the specific measurement value of bigha on the land. Bigha was built on 3600 Ilahi Gaj, about half of a modern acre. Some bigas have made Mahal. Some mahals were merged into dasturs.
