An elderly watchman/peon of the tribal school introduced Sudha Murty to Thandappa (a senior tribe in Karnataka)
About Sudha Murty:
The story "In Sahyadri Hills- A lesson in Humility" is written by Sudha Murty who is a writer, philanthropist, businesswoman and an educator. This story is based on her experience from one of her trips to the Sahyadri Hills.
A lesson in Humility:
- In this story, Sudha Murty went up the Sahyadri Hills during heavy rain to aid the tribal school located on the hill region. Reaching there, the author found that the school had only a single classroom with 2 tables and 2 chairs.
- The window had no shutter and there was a single blackboard and a water pot. There was only a elder man who worked as the watchman as well as peon in exchange for a free education for his grandson.
- When the author tried to communicate with the elder, he took her to the head of the tribe, Thandappa. The author came to know that due to heavy rain the children are unable to attend classes with wet uniform and other concerns.
- On hearing this, the author, on her next trip came back with a set of uniforms and umbrellas for the children. She also promised the children to bring them books on computers in Kannada language, since they were interested to learn about technologies.
- In return for the kindness, Thandappa presented the author with a bottle of their special traditional drink. When the author refused, Thandappa insisted that it is their culture to give something in return for any offering they receive.
- On hearing this the author humbly accepted the gift from the tribal senior.
