Answer:

Subsidiary Alliance

This policy was devised by Governor General Lord Wellesley to expand the British territory indirectly.

The company appointed Residents in Indian States who was supposed to give advise to the ruler but in reality he interfered and dominated the ruler.

An Indian ruler could not keep an army of his own .

An Indian ruler had to maintain British troops in his state , either by giving some of his territory or by paying for the maintenance of his troops.

He would have to take permission from the British before entering into alliance with another ruler or declaring war against another kingdom
